Cloth Diaper Safe Diaper Rash Cream

Why Rashes Occur on Baby Bums

Let’s start with what causes a rash because when we know what can cause a rash we know how to prevent it as prevention is better than treating it.

  • Irritation from urine and stool. Long exposure to urine or stool can irritate your babies skin. Not only your babies but everyone’s as it contains acids and other substances that can irritate.

  • Chafing or rubbing. A poorly fitting diaper may rub against the skin leading to a rash.

  • New product irritation. Your baby's skin may react to a new (to you) brand of baby wipes or disposable diapers. Or maybe you switched the detergent that you use to wash your cloth diapers. The same can be said for baby lotions, powders and oils.

  • New foods. When your baby switches to solid food, their stool changes and therefore the likelihood of a diaper rash. Changes in your baby's food can also increase the frequency of poopy diapers, which can lead to diaper rash. If your baby is still breastfed, it may develop a diaper rash in response to something the mother has eaten.

  • Antibiotics. Antibiotics kill bacteria — Any bacteria, both the good and the bad ones. When a baby takes antibiotics, their immune system may be affected which could result in a rash. Antibiotic use may also increase the risk of diarrhea which can cause a rash. Breastfed babies whose mothers take antibiotics also have an increased risk of diaper rash.

How to avoid Diaper Rash

Avoiding a diaper rash is better than treating one so here are also a few tips on how to avoid a diaper rash.

  • Change diapers frequently. Remove wet or dirty diapers as soon as possible to avoid your baby's skin to remain wet for too long.

  • Clean your baby's bum with water only. Reusable wipes or a washcloth are great for this purpose. Don’t use wipes with alcohol or fragrance. If you wish to use soap, select a mild, fragrance-free type.

  • After cleaning, make sure your baby's bum is completely dry. Gently pat the skin dry with a clean towel or let it air dry.

  • Time without a Diaper. Whenever possible, have your baby crawl/walk around without a diaper. Exposing skin to air is a natural and gentle way to let it dry.

  • Wash your hands after changing your baby. Hand-washing can prevent the spread of bacteria or yeast to other parts of your baby's body, to you, and other children.

Why Regular Diaper Rash Cream may not work when Cloth Diapering

While regular diaper creams are a go-to solution for disposable diaper users, they might not play well with cloth diapers. The crux of the issue lies in the ingredients. Many conventional diaper creams contain petroleum-based oils, thick emollients, and other synthetic additives that can create a sticky, water-repellent barrier on your cloth diapers. This barrier, while effective at preventing moisture from reaching the baby's skin, can also wreak havoc on cloth diapers, making them less absorbent and more prone to odors, staining, and persistent residue buildup. In other words, using the wrong diaper cream can inadvertently undermine the eco-friendly, cost-effective benefits of cloth diapering. So, if you've made the eco-conscious choice to use cloth diapers, it's equally important to choose a diaper cream that's in harmony with your decision.

Ingredients to avoid in Diaper Rash Cream

When it comes to choosing the perfect diaper cream for cloth diapering, knowledge is your secret weapon. To keep your cloth diapers in top shape while keeping your baby comfortable, watch out for these no-go ingredients:

  • Petroleum-based Oils: Petroleum jelly, mineral oil, and other petrochemical ingredients create a water-repellent barrier that can suffocate your cloth diapers, leaving them less absorbent and prone to nasty build-up.

  • Synthetic Fragrances and Dyes: Vibrant colors and sweet scents might be enticing, but they often conceal a cocktail of harsh chemicals that can irritate your baby's skin and leave stubborn stains on your cloth diapers.

  • Parabens and Phthalates: These questionable additives can wreak havoc on your baby's delicate skin and are best avoided for the well-being of your little one and the longevity of your cloth diapers.

  • Harsh Chemicals: Stay vigilant for ingredients like phenoxyethanol and sodium benzoate, as they can be harmful to both your baby's skin and the environment, potentially harming your cloth diapers.

  • Thick Emollients: While they might offer excellent protection, creams with thick emollients can be challenging to wash out of your cloth diapers, leading to stubborn residue and reduced diaper performance.

By steering clear of these diaper cream ingredients, you're not only ensuring your baby's comfort but also safeguarding your cloth diapers for countless more diapering adventures.

Petroleum based oils

The clash between petroleum-based diaper creams and cloth diapers is akin to an epic showdown between two titans, but with a rather predictable outcome. Petroleum-based creams, often laden with heavy oils and synthetic additives, pose a serious threat to cloth diapers. These creams create a water-repellent fortress on your baby's bottom, sealing in moisture and guarding against irritation. However, the same guardian spirit turns against cloth diapers, making them less absorbent and more prone to staining and odors. It's a classic case of collateral damage, where the very qualities that make petroleum-based creams effective for skin protection become a bane for cloth diapers. If you're a cloth diaper enthusiast, it's vital to steer clear of these greasy foes and opt for diaper creams that play nicely with both your baby's delicate skin and your beloved cloth diapers.

Ingredients to look out for in Diaper Rash Cream

When you're in the market for a diaper rash cream compatible with cloth diapering, keep your eyes peeled for these superhero ingredients that offer both protection and peace of mind:

  • Zinc Oxide: This ingredient is the MVP, creating a breathable barrier to shield your baby's skin without harming your cloth diapers.

  • Natural Oils: Ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, or sunflower oil soothe the skin and keep cloth diapers safe from residue build-up.

  • Shea Butter: Renowned for its moisturizing properties, shea butter pampers your baby's skin without interfering with cloth diaper absorption.

  • Calendula: This gentle flower extract possesses anti-inflammatory properties, making it a cloth diaper-friendly choice to help heal and soothe irritated skin.

  • Lanolin: For wool diaper covers, lanolin is the go-to ingredient, providing moisture resistance while still being gentle on your cloth diaper collection.

  • Fragrance-Free: Opt for creams with no added fragrances or dyes, as these can cause irritation and staining on cloth diapers.

  • Hypoallergenic: Look for products that are labeled as hypoallergenic to minimize the risk of allergies and sensitivities for both your baby and your cloth diapers.

Incorporating these ingredients into your diaper rash cream of choice ensures a harmonious relationship between your baby's comfort and the longevity of your cloth diaper stash.

Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide, the unsung hero of diaper creams for cloth diapers, deserves a standing ovation. This white, unassuming mineral has the superpower to soothe your baby's sensitive skin while also playing nice with your cloth diapers. Unlike its petroleum-based counterparts, zinc oxide creates a breathable barrier that protects your baby's precious skin without leaving an unforgiving residue on your cloth diapers. It's like a guardian angel in cream form, standing between delicate bottoms and the potential discomfort of diaper rash. So, if you're a cloth diaper enthusiast, look for a diaper cream with zinc oxide in the ingredients list – your baby's skin will thank you, and your cloth diapers will stay perfectly absorbent, ready for countless diapering adventures.

Zinc oxide's protective prowess doesn't stop at safeguarding your baby's skin; it also adds a touch of character to your cloth diapers. While some may fret about potential stains, it's essential to remember that these marks are like badges of honor on your cloth diapers, bearing witness to the countless diaper changes and adventures. These stains may look daunting, but they rarely affect the performance of your cloth diapers. In fact, they're a testament to the cloth diaper's resilience, enduring every mess, and emerging as good as new after a thorough wash. So, in the world of cloth diapers, zinc oxide not only provides unparalleled comfort but also a little touch of history, etched in every stain without compromising performance.

DIY Diaper Rash Cream

DIY diaper rash cream is like a magical potion brewed in your very own kitchen, and it's not just a cost-effective choice; it's a true superhero in its own right. Crafting your own cream gives you complete control over the ingredients, allowing you to tailor the formula to your baby's unique needs. You can skip the questionable additives and synthetic fragrances, creating a natural, gentle balm that you trust. Plus, it's a creative adventure, a mini-project that can turn your kitchen into an apothecary's laboratory, where you blend soothing ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and essential oils to concoct a remedy that is safe for both your little one and your cherished cloth diapers. The added bonus? The sense of pride in knowing that you're nurturing your baby's comfort while embracing the sustainable, eco-friendly spirit of cloth diapering. So, roll up those sleeves and whip up your very own diaper rash cream - a labor of love for your little one and your cloth diaper collection.
